There is an emphasis on phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. The teaching style is direct instruction and guided practice, including extensive small and large group activities. In addition to classwork, students will be assigned homework and small projects and will have the opportunity of working with tutors and individual goal coaches.

PRE-HISET (ABE LEVEL 2)

The Pre-HiSET class mainly focuses on reading instruction and critical thinking.  Students are promoted to the highest level based on improved reading scores, so this is the main area of focus.  We do this primarily by reading aloud, reading silently, learning vocabulary, and learning comprehension strategies.  Although reading is the main focus, we also work on other topics.  Students are introduced to the basics of grammar, paragraph construction, map and graph reading, civics, American history, physical sciences, earth sciences, and biology.
